Transfer - Connect and Disconnect Your Utilities

A move that is hassle-free will depend largely on how well you prepare yourself and take care of all the little details before hand. The little details can be a cause for a lot of headaches if they are not handled well before the moving day arrives; utilities are one of these details. It would be devastating to move all the way to your new home only to find that there is no power and the phones are not working.

It is not very possible to disconnect your utilities from the house where you are moving, have them transferred to your new home so that you have them already there and connected when you finally move in. the beauty of it all is that you can move your utilities via the internet which by extension means that you can do this from the comfort of your home and you therefore do not have to undergo the extra hassles.

There are a few rules that are followed when one is disconnecting, transferring and moving utilities during a move;

• It is always a good idea to contact the utility company at least two weeks before the move to allow them time to transfer your utilities. This rule may be more flexible or rigid from company to company but to be on the safe side, it would be better to follow this rule of thumb. Contact their customer care or service departments and inform them of your intention to move.

• It is always important to follow up with the utility company and ensure that they have your power, heat and phone connected in your new place at least a day before your move.

• Ensure that all the utilities come to your home and take the final reading and hand you your bill before you move. Keep a copy of the bill for your records. It is also a good idea to settle the bills for your old place before moving to avoid any confusion that may arise.

• Ensure that all your utility providers have a forwarding address from you before or immediately after you move. You do not want to have to undergo the hassles and expenses of having to go and fetch your mails from your old place. Another danger of not leaving your forwarding address is that the utility company will send your final invoice to your old place and maybe by the time you receive it they will be charging you for late payments and things like that.

• Pay the utility company any overdue fees that you may owe them before you move; it is always good to have a fresh start and not to have creditors following you into your new home demanding to be paid. This is also a good time to ask for any refunds that may be owed to you that may have accrued from change from what you have paid.

• Carry your local directory with you just incase the need ever arises to contact someone there.

Transferring your utilities from your old place into your new place is very quick and painless. Water and sewerage, and garbage collection services can be arranged in your new area with the town or city department that is involved.
