Moving Van Insurance

Moving van insurance is an important issue that is often disregarded by a majority of individuals when they are hiring a moving van for their move. It is virtually impossible to foretell all the incidents that may occur while your household goods or office furniture is being transported. It is therefore a good idea to ensure that the moving company that you hire has adequate insurance to cover against theft, loss or damage on your property while in transit.

It is a basic requirement that all moving companies have some form of insurance to safeguard against such incidents. This basic insurance may however not provide all the coverage that you need to safeguard yourself completely and it may therefore be necessary to purchase extra insurance to make sure that you are covered. The two additional forms of insurance coverage available are replacing value coverage and the other is basic liability coverage.

By choosing to purchase the additional insurance for declared value protection, then you get to decide what the value of your items is and then the insurer is liable and they will have to pay that amount should anything happen to your property. Should you opt for replacement value coverage; the mover will pay you should the items that you insured be stolen or if it gets lost while in transit. In the second coverage, the insurer will pay you for the exact value of the item that you loose. If for instance you loose a 5 year old vase, the insurer will only pay cash for the vase as it was worth 5 years ago.

The best way to know what items you have transported is to keep inventory of everything that you plan to transport and then check-off the list when you reach your destination. Statistics show that chances of you making a claim for a refund after using a moving company is 1:3 therefore its better to be safe than sorry. You should check that all your inventory is there and in the condition that it was previously in as was mentioned in your inventory list.

Should you find that there are any pieces that are either missing or broken, it is always best to leave the pieces in the packaging that it was brought in and report the matter to the crew while they are still present at your place. Immediately then make a list of all items that are missing or damaged and after putting your signature there, also ensure that you get the signature of the person that is in charge of the crew that is delivering your things. Make a follow up the next day with the company to make sure that your claim has been reported. Report damages or loss as soon as they are discovered to increase your chances of having your claim processed quickly.

Keep all the paper work that you have relating to the move in a safe place until you are satisfied that the claim that you made has been resolved. It is always prudent to read all the paperwork and ensure that you understand it.
